A golfer’s dream course is taking shape on the gently sloping sand dunes along the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Envisioned by Greg Norman Golf Course Design, Rancho San Lucas’ 18-hole golf course is destined to become Cabo San Lucas’ premier golfing destination utilizing innovative technology and sustainable practices.
The extraordinary setting alone indicates that this isn’t just any other golf course, with its spectacular views of desert and ocean. The course promises a challenging game with higher desert areas and lower links areas with six holes along the ocean and a signature island green on hole 17. Thanks to an exquisite design by golf legend Greg Norman, the golf course will embody the native allure of its environment, almost as if the Pacific Ocean had long been waiting for it to emerge from the dunes so it could lap its waves against it. The topography of the area, full of short ups and downs created by the dune environment, lends itself to playful design features, enabling a mix of challenges for golfers.
Beyond the view, the latest technology will propel this course to greatness. The new course will use revetted bunkers, the first course in Mexico to feature the patented technology. This feature stabilizes and creates level grass settings in and around putting greens in difficult to maintain sandy and windy environments. The material also sculpts enclosures and hills which add texture, aesthetic appeal and variety to the course. Eco Bunker´s new technology will make it easier to take advantage of naturally graceful contours and gentle hills while maintaining their lush verdant surfaces year-round. This approach will translate into a well-maintained, stable golf course, with little to no downtime necessary for maintenance, a welcome alternative from other sandy beachside golf settings which must be rebuilt on a constant basis, hampering year-round usage.
Sustainable practices are also being incorporated into Rancho San Lucas’s integral development. For example, sand and other earth removed from the golf course area during shaping is being reused as bases for roads and housing platforms that will surround the golf course, with minimal need to move massive amounts of earth and sand to faraway collection points. The natural atmosphere is also being enhanced through landscaping, with the relocation and preservation of trees, shrubs, and other native vegetation built into the golf course.
“Rancho San Lucas’ golf course will be an exceptional example of how to sustainably build a top-quality golf experience in a challenging natural environment,” explains John Nurminen, Rancho San Lucas Director of Agronomy. “And the way that it is being built will make it seem like this golf course has been here all along.”
Upon completion, Rancho San Lucas Golf Course will be a golfer´s dream, with features and challenges that will keep players coming back year after year. The course is slated for completion in 2019.
